The City of Holroyd, situated in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, traces its origins back to July 1872 when it was first proclaimed as the “Municipal District of Prospect and Sherwood.” Over time, it evolved into the “Municipality of Prospect and Sherwood” in 1906, and in 1927, it was renamed the “Municipality of Holroyd” in honor of Arthur Holroyd, its inaugural mayor. Achieving city status on 1 January 1991, it became the Holroyd City Council, with its administrative center located in Merrylands, approximately 25 kilometers (16 mi) west of the Sydney central business district.
Councillor Greg Cummings, a member of the Labor Party, served as the final mayor of the Holroyd City Council. However, on 12 May 2016, the majority of the council merged into the newly formed Cumberland Council, while a small northern section merged into the newly re-established City of Parramatta Council.
Initially established with six aldermen at-large, the council’s journey began with its proclamation as the Municipal District of Prospect and Sherwood in July 1872. Subsequent transitions led to the Municipality of Prospect and Sherwood in 1906 before adopting the name Municipality of Holroyd in 1927. The administrative center shifted from Merrylands West to Merrylands in 1962, with the Holroyd Administration Centre officially opened by Premier Bob Heffron on 19 June 1962.
