The History of The Hills Shire
The Hills Shire, formerly known as Baulkham Hills Shire until 2008, is a local government area situated in the Greater Sydney region of New South Wales, Australia. Located northwest of the Sydney central business district, it spans an area of 401 square kilometers (155 sq mi), stretching from the M2 Hills Motorway in the south to Wisemans Ferry on the Hawkesbury River in the north. As of the 2021 census, The Hills Shire boasted a population of 191,876 residents.
Dr. Peter Gangemi, a member of the Liberal Party, currently serves as the mayor of The Hills Shire, having been elected on 21 December 2021.
The region’s history traces back to the early 1800s when Dharug Aborigines inhabited the land. European settlement began with Governor Arthur Phillip’s visit in 1788, and gradual development ensued with the establishment of road systems and farming. Infrastructure milestones, such as the introduction of the first school in 1840 and the inauguration of a tram from Parramatta to Baulkham Hills in 1902, facilitated the area’s growth and connectivity. Over time, the population steadily increased alongside ongoing infrastructure development.
In 2015, a review of local government boundaries proposed mergers affecting The Hills Shire. Ultimately, parts of The Hills Shire south of the M2 Motorway, including North Rocks, Northmead, and part of Baulkham Hills, merged with the City of Parramatta to form the revised City of Parramatta Council, effective immediately.
