Sutherland Shire, situated in the southern region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, covers an area of 370 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 218,464 as per the 2016 census. Famously known as “The Shire,” it has been featured in various reality television series.
Geographically, the area lies south of Botany Bay and the Georges River, approximately 26 kilometers south of Sydney’s central business district. It shares borders with the Bayside Council, City of Canterbury-Bankstown, City of Wollongong, City of Liverpool, Georges River Council, and City of Campbelltown local government areas.
The administrative center of Sutherland Shire is located in the suburb of Sutherland, with the council chambers situated in Eton Street. As of January 10, 2022, Cr. Carmelo Pesce, representing the Liberal Party, serves as the mayor.
Historically, Sutherland Shire holds significance as the first landing site of Lieutenant James Cook, who came ashore in what is now the suburb of Kurnell on April 29, 1770. Originally considered for the first British Settlement, Sydney Cove was ultimately chosen during the First Fleet.
The area was originally inhabited by clans of the Dharawal people, with archaeological evidence suggesting Aboriginal settlement dating back at least 8,500 years.
