The Municipality of Strathfield was established on 2 June 1885 under the proclamation of NSW Governor Sir Augustus Loftus. Initially encompassing the areas of Redmire (later renamed Strathfield), Homebush, and part of Druitt Town, it was formed following petitions from Redmire residents despite opposition from other areas fearing dominance by wealthier residents.
The council’s first permanent chambers were built in 1887 after operating from various private homes. Over time, the council’s geography and population expanded. In 1892, Flemington and part of present-day Strathfield were added, dividing the area into three wards: Flemington, Homebush, and Strathfield. These wards were abolished in 1916.
In 1947, the Municipality of Homebush merged with Strathfield, incorporating present-day Flemington and Homebush West. Additionally, in 1949, part of Enfield was added, including Strathfield South, part of Greenacre, and part of Belfield.
Further changes occurred in 1992 when a portion of Strathfield was transferred to Auburn Council for Sydney Olympic Park, and in 2021, a proposal was made to separate Belfield into northern and southern parts, with the northern part joining Strathfield South. This was approved in 2023.
Today, the Municipality of Strathfield covers an area of 14.1 square kilometres, with an estimated population of 45,593 residents as per the 2021 census. It includes residential neighborhoods, town centers, heritage sites, open spaces, lifestyle amenities, and educational institutions like the Australian Catholic University and the University of Sydney. Cr. Karen Pensabene, representing the Australian Labor Party, serves as the Mayor, with Cr. Sandy Reddy as the Deputy Mayor from the Strathfield Independents team.
