The City of Ryde, situated in the Northern Sydney region of New South Wales, Australia, has a rich history dating back to its establishment as the Municipal District of Ryde in 1870. Achieving municipality status in 1906, it was officially declared as the City of Ryde in 1992.
Spanning from the Parramatta River to the Lane Cove River, the City of Ryde is surrounded by natural boundaries, with the peninsula of Hunters Hill to the east and the City of Parramatta to the west. Covering an expansive area of 40.651 square kilometres (15.695 sq mi), it boasted an estimated population of 129,123 as of the 2021 census.
Councillor Trenton Brown, representing the Liberal Party, has been serving as the mayor of the City of Ryde since 28 March 2024.
The journey of the City of Ryde began in June 1870 when 201 residents petitioned the governor for the incorporation of the Municipal District of Ryde, leading to its formal proclamation on 11 November 1870. Although initially the largest Sydney municipality, an error in the proclamation regarding the western boundary necessitated a new proclamation on 11 June 1872.
In June 1894, the northern section of the municipality, known as Marsfield, was established as the Municipal District of Marsfield. It later became the Municipality of Eastwood in 1907 before re-amalgamating with Ryde following the passage of the Local Government (Areas) Act 1948.
Under the Local Government Act 1906, the council name transitioned to the Municipality of Ryde. The City of Ryde was officially proclaimed on 20 September 1991 by Governor Peter Sinclair, coinciding with the retitling of aldermen as councillors and the town clerk becoming the general manager under the Local Government Act 1993.
In 2015, a review of local government boundaries proposed a merger of the Hunter’s Hill, Lane Cove, and Ryde Councils to form a new council. However, in July 2017, the Berejiklian government decided to abandon this proposed forced merger, along with several others, preserving the autonomy of the City of Ryde.
