The History of Rockdale
The City of Rockdale, situated in the southern and St George regions of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, was a significant local government area with its city center positioned 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) southwest of the Sydney central business district, on the western shores of Botany Bay. Originally proclaimed on 13 January 1871 as the “Municipal District of West Botany,” Rockdale underwent several name changes before attaining city status in 1995. However, on 9 September 2016, it merged with the neighboring City of Botany Bay to form the new municipality of Bayside Council.
At the time of amalgamation, the last mayor of the City of Rockdale was Cr. Bill Saravinovski, representing the Labor Party.
The history of the City of Rockdale dates back to its proclamation as the “Municipal District of West Botany” on 13 January 1871, covering an area of 23 square kilometers (9 sq mi) with two wards, West Botany Ward and Arncliffe Ward. The initial incorporation followed a petition signed by 85 residents, published in the Government Gazette on 22 August 1870. The first election, held on 8 February 1871 at the Tempe Family Hotel on Rocky Point Road, saw the appointment of six aldermen and two auditors, with Charles St Julian, the mayor of Marrickville, serving as the returning officer.
Over the years, the City of Rockdale witnessed significant development, including the addition of Rockdale Ward and Scarborough Ward on 17 December 1886, expanding the number of aldermen from six to nine. Notable among the developers during this period was Frederick Jamison Gibbes, a member of parliament, whose legacy is commemorated by Gibbes Street in Banksia. Council meetings initially took place in a purpose-built stone building on the western side of Rocky Point Road, Arncliffe, before relocating to a new Town Hall at the corner of Rocky Point Road and Bryant Street, Rockdale, in 1888.
