The City of Penrith, located in New South Wales, Australia, is a significant local government area with its seat situated in Penrith, approximately 50 kilometers west of Sydney’s central business district. The region holds historical importance as it occupies part of the traditional lands of the Darug people.
Established on 12 May 1871 as a municipality, the area underwent significant administrative changes over the years. On 1 January 1949, the municipalities of Penrith, St Marys, and Castlereagh, along with part of the Nepean Shire, amalgamated to form the new Municipality of Penrith. Recognized as a city on 21 October 1959, Penrith continued to evolve, expanding westwards to include Emu Plains and Emu Heights, formerly part of the City of Blue Mountains, on 25 October 1963.
As of the 2021 census, the City of Penrith boasted an estimated population of 217,664 residents. Leading the local government is Mayor Todd Carney, a member of the Labor Party.
