North Sydney Council, established on 29 July 1890, serves the Lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was formed through the merger of three boroughs: East St Leonards, St Leonards, and Victoria.
Encompassing an area bounded by Willoughby to the north and north-west, Northern Beaches to the north-east, Mosman to the east, Lane Cove to the west, and Sydney Harbour to the south, the council covers approximately 10.9 square kilometres. As of the 2016 census, it had an estimated population of 67,658.
The administrative seat of North Sydney Council is situated in the suburb of North Sydney, about 3 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district. The current mayor, Cr. Zoë Baker, an independent politician, was first elected on 10 January 2022.
Initially formed as the Borough of North Sydney, the council underwent several changes, including the separation of the Mossman Ward as the Borough of Mosman in 1893. With the passing of the Local Government Act in 1906, the council was renamed the Municipality of North Sydney.
The council’s meetings were initially held in the East St Leonards Town Hall on Alfred Street, Milsons Point, before moving to the North Sydney Council Chambers on Miller Street, North Sydney, from 12 July 1926.
