The History of Hurstville

The Hurstville City Council, situated in the St George and southern region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, played a significant role in the area’s local governance. Established in 1887, with its city seat located 17 kilometers (11 mi) southwest of Sydney and west of Botany Bay, Hurstville was initially proclaimed as a municipality. It attained city status in 1988 and continued its civic duties until its abolition in 2016. Following this, it merged with Kogarah City Council to form the new Georges River Council.

The council underwent various changes throughout its history. Initially divided into three wards—Bexley, Hurstville, and Peakhurst—it later expanded and reorganized its wards several times. Notably, in December 1920, Hurstville joined forces with the councils of Rockdale, Kogarah, and Bexley to establish the St George County Council, aimed at providing electricity to the respective areas.

However, the council faced a significant setback in 2023 when former councillors Vince Badalati, Con Hindi, and Philip Sansom were found guilty of corruption by the ICAC. This event marked a notable chapter in the council’s history and raised concerns about governance and integrity within the local administration.
