The History of Canada Bay
Canada Bay, nestled in Sydney’s Inner West, New South Wales, Australia, lies approximately 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) west of the Sydney central business district. It is part of the City of Canada Bay local government area.
Situated on the southern shore of Parramatta River, Canada Bay is flanked by the suburbs of Burwood, Croydon, and Five Dock. The administrative center of the City of Canada Bay is located in Drummoyne, despite the suburb of Canada Bay lending its name to the area.
The name “Canada Bay” commemorates a significant historical connection between Australia and Canada. After the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837 to 1838, Irish and French Canadian rebels were exiled to Australia. While imprisoned at Longbottom Stockade (now Concord Oval), they contributed to the construction of Parramatta Road and collected oyster shells for lime production. Following their pardons between 1843 and 1844, most returned to Canada, leaving behind traces of their legacy in place names such as Exile Bay, France Bay, Durham Street, Marceau Drive, Polding Street, and Gipps Street. Bayview Park also features a plaque honoring these exiles.
The City of Canada Bay was established in December 2000 through the amalgamation of Concord and Drummoyne councils, reflecting the rich historical tapestry of the region.
