Burwood, also known as Burwood Council, is a local government area nestled in Sydney’s inner-west, within New South Wales, Australia. Its mayor, Cr. John Faker, represents the Labor Party. Covering a modest 7 square kilometers, it ranks as the second smallest Local Government Area in New South Wales, surpassed only by Hunter’s Hill.
Established on March 27, 1874, the municipality boasts historic council chambers on Conder Street, meticulously crafted by architect Jack Hennessy in 1877. Interestingly, Hennessy later served as mayor of Burwood.
In 2015, a review of local government boundaries suggested merging Burwood with neighboring councils, Canada Bay and Strathfield, to form a larger entity spanning 41 square kilometers and accommodating approximately 163,000 residents at the time.
However, Strathfield Council contested this proposal in May 2016, initiating legal proceedings in the New South Wales Land and Environment Court. Ultimately, the NSW Government withdrew from the case due to identified legal flaws in the delegate’s report. Consequently, the merger plan ground to a halt.
In July 2017, the Berejiklian government opted to abandon the enforced merger of Strathfield, Burwood, and Canada Bay, alongside other proposed amalgamations.
