The History of Ashfield

The region of Ashfield, nestled in the Inner West of Sydney, Australia, once thrived as its own local government entity. Established on a historic day, 28th December 1871, it began as the “Borough of Ashfield,” later transitioning to the “Municipality of Ashfield” in 1906. Over the years, it played a significant role in shaping the local landscape, located just 10 kilometers west of Sydney’s bustling central business district.

Under the leadership of various officials, including the final mayor, Councillor Lucille McKenna of the Australian Labor Party, Ashfield Municipality grappled with a multitude of issues. These ranged from urban redevelopment concerns, like the transformation of Ashfield Mall, to broader debates over infrastructure projects such as the controversial M4 East tunnel, feared for its potential impact on traffic and pollution.

However, Ashfield’s story took a significant turn in 2016 when it merged with Marrickville Council and the Municipality of Leichhardt to form the Inner West Council. This amalgamation came amidst a backdrop of local discontent, with some residents and officials advocating for a return to the pre-merger arrangement. In December 2021, this sentiment materialized into action as a majority of voters within the Inner West Council area favored a reversal of the 2016 merger, seeking to restore Ashfield, Leichhardt, and Marrickville as separate entities.

Ashfield’s journey was not without its controversies and challenges. Over the years, the council faced internal strife, earning notoriety at times for dysfunctionality and disputes among its members. Despite this, its contributions to the local community and its role in shaping the Inner West’s identity remain significant.

While the Municipality of Ashfield may no longer exist in its previous form, its legacy endures, woven into the fabric of the Inner West’s rich tapestry of history and governance.
